The first ever Ferris Wheel debuted at the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893. Dominating the skyline of the fairgrounds, the Wheel awed and amazed attendees, most of whom had never seen anything like it before in their lives. It was a symbol of technological innovation and engineering excellence. And to ride it? One reporter who took a spin said, "It is an indescribable sensation, that of revolving through such a vast orbit in a bird cage.” Towering above the White City at 264 ft high, the Ferris Wheel was a breakout star, seeing over 1 million riders over the course of the Fair, and catapulting the "Ferris Wheel" into worldwide fame, to be imitated and reproduced around the world thereafter.
That original Ferris Wheel no longer exists, but it can live on in our hearts (and on our shirts) forever.
