This is a copy of the pass that Benedict Arnold signed for Major John Andre (under the alias John Anderson) to grant him passage back to British lines. Dated September 22nd, 1780, Andre would be hanged as a spy 10 days later.
Transcribed, the pass reads:
Head Quarters Robinson
House September 22nd 1780
Permit Mr. John Anderson to pass the
guards to the White Plains, or below, if He
Chuses. He being on Public Business by my
Direction.
